David Salle was one of the leading figures of the neorealist movement in the 1980s! He started as a porn photographer, but began playing with the black-and-white photographs in other contexts. This painting, “Demonic Roland” (1987), features one of his iconic inserted canvas panels, space was made for it by cutting into the larger canvas, as well as a juxtaposition of many imageries that came to define his style. David Salle is a personal favorite of mine, and one of the first artists I really fell in love with. The material innovation within his imagery, while maintaining the excitement and drama of the expressionists, captivated me and held my attention. His explanation of viewer engagement has stuck with me through my exploration of contemporary art, and his effortless (and timeless) class leads him to being an extraordinarily interesting and eccentric character.
